Artifort Concorde 784 Lounge Chair by Pierre Paulin, 1966

This early Artifort Concorde 784 lounge chair, designed by Pierre Paulin in 1966, has been fully restored in my Maastricht workshop. The chair received new webbing, new (plant based) foam and newly rebuilt upholstery in Kvadrat (Tonica 2) wool. The steel base was refinished in RAL 9010 white. Combined with the light grey wool upholstery, the chair appears almost weightless, enhancing the elegant and sculptural qualities of Paulin's design. What makes this particular example especially interesting is its early construction. The first Concorde models were built using traditional upholstery techniques: webbing, carefully shaped furniture foam and a significant amount of hand craftsmanship. In these early chairs, the upholsterer quite literally created the final form of the seat. Later production versions were manufactured using pre-moulded foam shells, which increased production efficiency but fundamentally changed the construction process. Many enthusiasts and collectors consider these early hand-built examples to offer a superior seating experience and a more refined character. Nearly sixty years after its introduction, the Concorde remains a remarkable piece of modernist design—combining sculptural presence, exceptional comfort and the unmistakable vision of Pierre Paulin.
