François charles schenckbecher (1887-1946) watercolor on paper "bouquet of flowers in a vase" signed lower right wooden frame and gilded stucco, under glass dimensions with frame: 66.5x51cm dimensions without frame: 42x28.5cm very good condition, wear to the frame *born in niedernai on october 5, 1887 to françois xavier schenckbecher, carpenter and sacristan, and anne barbe hess. After studying at the obernai teacher training college, he became a teacher in rosheim in 1908. In 1911 he married julia stahl and had 3 children in 1914, 1916 and 1918. He attended the strasbourg school of decorative arts in 1912 and 1913, and then became a drawing teacher. He completed his military service in the german army and when war was declared was assigned as a nurse in a field hospital on the western front near verdun. After the war, he exhibited for the first time in rosheim at the maison d'art alsacienne a canvas painted in saverne acquired by the strasbourg museum. In 1919 and 1920 he took advanced courses in french like many alsatian teachers. In 1919 he was, with paul welsch, one of the creators of the "may group" and in 1920 became a member of the salon d'automne. In 1921, he was appointed professor of drawing and mathematics at the collège d'obernai, then at the lycée kléber in strasbourg. His wife died in 1922 and on 2 april 1923 he remarried in niedernai with marie barbe hess and the couple had a son. In 1927 he designed the poster, the set and the costumes for the mystery of joseph, which was performed in paris. He was appointed officer of the academy in 1929. In 1939, he was a teacher at the lycée louis-le-grand in paris. At the end of 1940, he resumed his position at the lycée kléber and died on 25 october 1942 in obernai. The visual artist isabelle schenckbecher was his granddaughter. Public collections museum of modern and contemporary art (strasbourg) 19 works. Royal museum of fine arts antwerp: landscape with 3 trees.
