A highly decorative Italian pedestal column, created in Florence during the “Florence Capital” years of the Kingdom of Italy (circa 1865–1871) and dating to the second half of the 19th century. Entirely hand-carved in wood and finished in an elegant combination of white ivory lacquer and hand-applied gold leaf, this piece perfectly captures the refined taste of that historic moment. The shaped triangular base provides excellent stability and gives rise to three scrolling volutes that gracefully support the shaft. The column is richly adorned with a continuous spiral of deeply hand-carved vine leaves and tendrils, which climb upward in a lively helical movement and lead the eye naturally to the Corinthian capital, entirely gilded in shimmering gold leaf. The dialogue between the soft ivory lacquer and the warm gilding creates a sophisticated play of light and shadow, enhancing the sculptural presence of the piece.
