Small, stylish Alvar Aalto bowl, Finland, estimated 1980s-90s. It is part of the Alvar Aalto collection for Iittala, which is an iconic piece of Finnish design. Aalto was inspired by the thousands of lakes in his Finnish homeland for its undulating shape (‘aalto’ in Finnish). He was awarded a prize in 1937 at the World Exhibition in Paris. The manufacturing method follows the original method; the vase is cast in a wooden mould with the mouth. This gives the vase a softer shape due to its distinctive design. The iconic design is inspired by the Finnish landscape of his youth and is both functional and sculptural. Iittala is stamped on the bottom, but it is difficult to see in the pictures. And there is also still the Iittala label on it. It is 5.5 cm in height, 10.5 X 10.5 cm in length/width and weighs 320 grams. No chips, cracks or other flaws.
