Still Life with Peonies by Peter Kelland

A favourite for this superb oil on canvas signed by the artist Peter Kelland, a painter specialising in floral still lifes from the second half of the 20th century. This artist drew inspiration from traditional Flemish and Dutch still lifes of the 17th century (the famous Medici vase or earthenware placed on a table with a fallen cut flower beside it, exactly like in this canvas). However, he approached the subject with a much more modern, more "impressionistic" touch. Our luminous canvas depicts a generous bouquet of peonies, poppy buds, and bellflowers, beautifully arranged in an earthenware vase. We appreciate the work of the material, generous and vibrant, and the masterful use of contrasts that brings a lovely depth to the composition. Hues of mauve, pink, and red add real vitality to the muted background. In excellent condition, this piece is of a distinctly timeless elegance. The fact that it is presented without a frame gives it a more modern, raw aspect that breaks the overly classic feel of the painting. Height: 40 cm. Width: 30 cm. Depth: 2 cm.
