Ancient Ethiopian tripod seat - Gurage-Oromo (1920-1940)

A superb piece of primitive art from East Africa combining geometric rigor influenced by the Copts with resolutely modernist architectural lines. The seat is topped with a stylized cubist aquatic bird head. Nomadic transport: The rear appendage is perforated for the passage of a transport strap. Origin: Ethiopia (Gurage/Oromo art, Jimma region). Period: First half of the 20th century (around 1920-1940). Magnificent deep, dark, and reflective patina on the seat (greasy patina from use), contrasting with the naturally discolored pads under the base. Condition: authentic field piece, sound, rigid, and structurally stable.
