American Grand Bureau all sides carved "Leopold Desk Co." – Circa 1920
Exceptional and imposing American executive desk with double pedestal in solid oak, a true testament to the great era of American office furniture in the first half of the 20th century. This desk has a rare double historical provenance that will delight enthusiasts and collectors: The Original Manufacturer: It features its brass authentication plaque engraved "Made by Leopold Desk Company – Burlington, Iowa" affixed to the edge of the central drawer. The Leopold company was one of the most renowned high-end office furniture manufacturers in the United States for its durability and craftsmanship. The Historical Distributor: It also retains its original paper label from the authorised dealer in Manhattan under the top: "[...]ER DESK CO. – New & Used Office Furniture, 391 B'way, New York". The vintage phone number is still visible with the famous textual area code for Lower Manhattan: "Phone CAnal 6-2426". The piece stands out for the richness of its finishes, notably featuring magnificent carved friezes in arabesques across all the upper panels and drawer fronts, as well as beautifully turned bulbous legs and supports. Characteristics and details: Materials: Very heavy and robust structure in wood veneer with a deep dark patina and warm grain. Storage: Equipped with two large side cabinets, each containing three deep drawers, as well as a large central drawer with its original wooden compartments for small supplies. Double-sided finish: The back of the desk is fully panelled and carved with the same care as the front, allowing it to be majestically placed in the centre of a room. Condition: Good overall condition for its age (over a century). It exhibits a superb patina of use that gives it all its charm and authenticity, with some signs of wear (see photos).
