A beautiful example of early 1950s lighting design. While the form might recall swedish pendant lamps by luxus, this is in fact a true dutch design by philips. It’s uncertain whether louis kalff was directly involved, but the design clearly carries the spirit of that era. The opaline glass shade is elegantly connected to a wooden top, forming a harmonious unity despite the contrast in materials. The glass shade appears to float in front of the wooden back panel, creating a soft reflection of light on the wood. This adds warmth and depth to the design. The transition between the materials is seamless, and the way the shade is suspended by its electrical cord gives the construction a light, almost delicate appearance. The lamp is in excellent vintage condition, with no damage to the glass and only minimal signs of use on the wooden hanging structure. A refined and atmospheric piece for any interior.
