Antique Japanese wardrobe with sliding doors – Taishō/Showa period (c. 1920-1950)

Antique Japanese armoire with sliding doors and two lower drawers, made of solid wood and dated between the end of the Taishō period and the beginning of the Shōwa period, circa 1920–1950. This type of Japanese domestic storage furniture was used to keep dishes, textiles, or everyday utensils. Its compact size allowed it to be easily integrated into traditional interiors. The piece features two sliding doors providing access to an interior space equipped with a shelf for organising various items. The lower part includes two drawers with traditional metal handles, intended for storing small objects or textiles. The drawer fronts showcase a beautiful grain characteristic of keyaki wood (Japanese zelkova), while the interior of the drawers is made of sugi (Japanese cedar), a common combination in traditional Japanese furniture. The surface exhibits a natural patina with signs of use, developed over time and reflecting the authentic character of antique Japanese furniture. Today, this piece can be used as a low sideboard, storage unit, or decorative element in contemporary interiors inspired by Japandi, wabi-sabi, or minimalist styles. Details. Origin: Japan.
