Arne Jacobsen Swan Chair for Fritz Hansen

Condition: Very old original model from the 1960s, retaining its cross-shaped column. Traces of the Fritz Hansen label are still visible. The original upholstery is in very good condition. The foam has firmed up. Description Arne Jacobsen was one of the most important Danish architects and designers of the 20th century. His work, inseparable from modernism, is exhibited in many museums around the world. Young Arne Jacobsen first trained as a stonemason before studying architecture at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. Forced to flee to Sweden during World War II due to his Jewish heritage, he was appointed a professor there in 1964. During this time, Jacobsen intensified his work as a designer. He created classics such as the Ant, the Egg, the Swan, Grand Prix, and Series 7, true icons of modernism. The AJ cutlery series, chosen by Stanley Kubrick for his cult film of 1968, 2001: A Space Odyssey, also dates from this period. The "Swan" chair was designed by Arne Jacobsen in 1958 for the waiting room of the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen. Its design was revolutionary for the time, as it was devoid of angles and sharp edges.
