Beautiful oil on canvas from the 19th century depicting a navy. In the foreground, a three-masted ship is moored in the basin, further on we see other ships and also a dock. Very nice treatment of the cloudy sky. This painting is strongly in the taste of auguste berthon, a 19th century artist who was the official painter of the navy in 1904. We find the artist's touch with a very similar style of work. The treatment of a cloudy sky with a few spots of blue appears, the boats and their rigging are treated in the same way, the same port scenery. The only mystery remains the signature here written "berton" while on other oils are signed "berthon", while the calligraphy of the two signatures is almost identical. The canvas, restored in the twentieth century, was mounted on a wooden panel.
