Terracotta vase Djenne Mali Africa

Ancient terracotta from Djenne, Mali, Africa. This beautiful object has pure, elongated lines that give it an ethnic-chic charm. But it is also a genuine antique object rich in history. This earthenware vase from the Djenné culture (Mali, West Africa) is a traditional pear-shaped container generally dating from a period between the 12th and 16th centuries. Main characteristics: It features a pear-shaped body, a narrow neck highlighted by a lip, and a widely flared mouth. Material and texture: handmade from local clay (terracotta) without the aid of a potter's wheel, its surface displays a textured patina in shades of reddish ochre and beige. The bottom of the belly shows impressions of coiling or striated patterns made with reed mats or cords during shaping. Stability: lacking a flat base, this type of ancient pottery was originally designed to be placed directly on loose soil or a beaten earth floor. It is here presented on a circular base made of weaving (rattan or braided straw) to keep it upright. Cultural context of Djenné: pottery from the inner Niger delta region in Mali is globally recognised for its artistic finesse.
