Watercolour on paper depicting Notre Dame de Paris as seen from the banks of the Seine. It is signed in pencil by the artist André FRAYE in the lower left corner. It is protected by glass and surrounded by a gilded wooden frame with a relief decoration of foliage. Good condition 20th century. Dimensions: Height 30 cm X Width 39 cm X Thickness 2 cm – Visible dimensions: Height 18.5 cm X Width 26 cm. André Fraye (Nantes 1887 – Paris 1963) moved to Paris in 1909, where he became a student of Maxime Maufra. He attended the Académie Julian and exhibited for the first time in 1911 at the Salon d’Automne. He also participated in the Salon des Tuileries and the Salon des Indépendants, and was featured in various group exhibitions in Europe, the United States, and Japan. In 1921, he received the Blumenthal prize, the first awarded for painting. André Fraye is especially known for his seascapes created with great visual acuity. A vibrant and appealing colourist, he focused on making colours resonate, and was often compared to Van Dongen, Bonnard, or Marquet, as well as the neo-realist Dunoyer de Ségonzac.
