The Bengara-Ume — Rust red, ume and asanoha

The Bengara-Ume is a vintage Japanese silk table runner handmade by Renaras from an authentic Tsumugi silk textile with exceptional surface complexity. The background is dyed in Bengara (rust red based on iron oxide), historically reserved for the most durable architectural surfaces in Japan: temple interiors, ceremonial lacquered objects, and walls of structures built to last centuries. On this warm and lively background, two of Japan's most classic motifs are woven with the precision of Kasuri weaving: the floating Ume (plum blossom, the oldest Japanese symbol of vitality, renewal, and quiet courage) emerges in muted slate blue, balanced by the geometric hemp leaf motif Asanoha in cream and gold-olive, a pattern symbolising strength and longevity in Japanese textile tradition for over a thousand years. Kasuri is one of the most demanding techniques in Japanese weaving. Individual threads are resist-dyed before weaving begins, then aligned by hand so that the pattern forms precisely as the loom works—a process where a single misaligned thread destroys the entire motif. The result is a surface that photographs cannot fully capture: a textile that changes colour and depth with the light, appearing as thoughtful from across the room as it does up close.
