The Hisui-Mandara is a vintage Japanese silk table runner, handmade by Renaras from an authentic Fukuro Obi — the formal double-layer ceremonial sash woven in the Nishijin tradition of Kyoto, historically the most prestigious textile production district in all of Japan. The background is dyed in Hisui-iro (jade green), the colour of the most revered stone in East Asian cultures as the embodiment of virtue, longevity, and imperial authority. In Japan, Hisui jade was associated with the protection of noble households and the continuity of family lineage; during the most important ceremonial occasions, this colour signalled a person of great importance. On this deep celadon background, symmetrical Karakusa arabesque motifs and geometric mandala compositions are woven in thick Kinran gold thread — the Nishijin metallic brocade technique where gold is wrapped around a silk core to produce a thread with flexibility, depth, and a glow that catches candlelight from every angle at once. The result is a surface that does not merely reflect light: it holds it, releases it slowly, and makes it warm. Fukuro Obi of this weaving density are among the longest to produce in the Nishijin tradition. The Karakusa arabesque — a continuous flowing vine motif of Chinese origin, adopted and refined by Japanese weavers over centuries to become a distinctly Japanese idiom — requires the Jacquard loom to execute hundreds of individual thread lifts per centimetre of finished textile. At the intersections of the mandalas, the gold thread is densest, creating a tactile, raised surface that appears almost three-dimensional under raking light. This is not a decoration applied to silk. It is silk constructed as decoration, from the first to the last thread. The table runner is reversible, with a second full silk surface on the reverse — two textiles in one, two moods for the same table. On a dining table, console, or sideboard, the Hisui-Mandara is the ideal piece for occasions that deserve more than a tablecloth. The jade green Hisui-iro background has a particular quality in European interiors: it is neither warm nor cold, harmonising equally serenely with walnut, marble, linen, aged brass, and dark lacquer. The Kinran gold motifs do the rest — elevating any surface they touch into something guests will notice before sitting down and remember long after they leave. One jade. One gold. Irreplaceable.
