Provençal pottery - jug known as "conscience" in glazed terracotta dating from the 19th century. Rare model with 6 handles that were used to pass ropes to securely fasten the jar, especially during transport on donkey back. Historically rooted in Provence, this popular art pottery was originally used by mendicant monks for proselytising or collecting olive oil from locals for the poor. Each person gave "according to their conscience, " which is how the jug got its name. In good condition considering its age. Height 30cm. Weight: 4.3 kg. Careful shipping.
