Overview. Large original early Biedermeier armoire from South Germany, dated to the 1820s. Hand-made piece showcasing solid cherry and cherry veneer over oak. Shellac hand-polished surface with an aged patina. Design. Typical Biedermeier restraint with clean rectangular proportions. Ebonized (black-painted) cornice, key escutcheons and trim provide a two-tone contrast. Solid cherry half-columns with ebonized bases and capitals. Storage. Two-door case opening to an interior with eight black shelves and a central divider. Two lockable drawers at the base for additional storage. Supplied with three original iron keys; original locks and hinges present. Materials. Constructed in cherry (solid and veneered) on oak substrate with iron hardware. Finish is shellac and ebonized detailing. Dimensions. Largest reported dimensions used: H 217 cm × W 163 cm × D 66 cm. Can be dismantled for transport.
