Large gouge-carved dish, folk art, France, circa 1960

Double-handled fruit dish, carved from a single piece of wood and sculpted with a gouge. The incised decoration in concentric rays highlights the manual gesture and gives the object a graphic, almost symbolic dimension. The whole has a raw and warm patina, evidence of daily domestic use. France, circa 1960.
