Large Norwegian trough carved by hand, 18th century. Carved from a single piece of solid wood, this large trough has a powerful, almost boat-like profile, and a surface deeply worked by generations of use. The interior retains pronounced marks of carving and tools, while the exterior has developed a pale, dry surface that beautifully contrasts with the darker, patinated interior. Cracks, wear, irregularities, and old repairs are visible throughout. Rather than detracting from the piece, these traces are an integral part of its character and history, giving the object the presence of a vernacular sculpture as much as a utilitarian vessel.
