This minimalist sofa/daybed by Dutch designer Gijs van der Sluis reflects the rational and architectural design language associated with Gispen furniture from the 1960s. The design is characterised by its strong horizontal lines and understated construction, resulting in a piece that appears both light and structurally precise. The long floating seat and slanted backrest are supported by a slender black metal frame that emphasises clarity and balance. The structure of the frame is intentionally visible, allowing the construction itself to be part of the aesthetic — a principle closely linked to the functionalist design tradition in the Netherlands. Recently reupholstered, the sofa is finished in a neutral fabric that complements the clean geometry of the frame. The discreet upholstery highlights the elegant proportions and architectural simplicity of the design. Gijs van der Sluis was known for creating refined and functional furniture with a clear structural logic, and this piece illustrates this approach through its calm presence and timeless modern character.
