A brooding hen with flamboyant plumage, ready to reign on the table or buffet. This vintage ceramic terrine takes the shape of a hen settled on her nest. The lid, which depicts the body, head, and tail of the bird, fits onto an oval base also adorned with feathers. The hand-painted decoration combines an intense orange-red with delicate golden highlights: finely drawn wing and tail feathers, speckled breast, bright red comb and wattles, attentive eye. The interior is glazed white. Ideal for presenting eggs, pastries, or treats, it will also bring a cheerful and rustic touch to a kitchen, display, or Easter table. Animal-shaped terrines are part of a long decorative tradition. Since the 18th century, the factories of Strasbourg, Sceaux, and Marseille competed with trompe-l'œil pieces representing vegetables, game, and poultry. The brooding hen has become one of the most cherished motifs of these old services and has never ceased to be reinterpreted since. Overall good condition, with some signs of use inside the base.
