Vintage cantilever chair S33 after Mart Stam, black leather and steel.
Rigorous, sculptural, timeless, this cantilever chair is directly in line with the S33, designed by Dutch architect Mart Stam in 1926, one of the first chairs without rear legs in the history of furniture. Its chrome-plated steel tube structure forms a continuous cantilever loop, supporting a seat and backrest in black leather with neatly visible seams. An absolute sobriety that does not need ornamentation to assert itself. Mart Stam is one of the pioneering figures of 20th-century modernist design. His cantilever chair, designed for the Weissenhof exhibition in Stuttgart in 1927, revolutionised the history of seating. Marcel Breuer, his counterpart at the Bauhaus, simultaneously explored this same form with chrome-plated steel tubing, giving rise to the famous Wassily chair (B3), the Cesca (B32), as well as the B33. Together, these two designers laid the foundations of modern tubular furniture that still inspires leading publishers today, such as Thonet or Fasem. Date: c. 1970-80. Colour: Black leather, chrome. Materials: Chrome-plated steel, leather. Dimensions: H 85 X W 48 X D 60 cm. Seat height ≈ 45 cm. A chair with an iconic silhouette, for enthusiasts of 20th-century modernist design.
