This tray is a quintessential example of the Brutalist metalwork of David Marshall, a Scottish-born sculptor who established his workshop in southern Spain in the 1970s. His work is highly regarded for its 'useful art' philosophy, blending raw industrial materials with organic, handcrafted textures. It is constructed from sand-cast aluminium and inlaid brass. Marshall is famous for this 'lunar' aesthetic, contrasting the cool, matte grey of the aluminium with the warm, golden tones of the brass. The design is Brutalist, characterised by heavy, blocky forms and an emphasis on the 'honesty' of the materials. The central brass inlay features a geometric, jagged 'maze' or cross-like pattern that is a signature motif in his 1970s and 80s collections. Because each piece is hand-cast, it features intentional 'imperfections'—fine pits, file marks, and a tactile, uneven surface—that ensure no two trays are exactly alike. This specific style was most prominent during the 1970s and 1980s. The tray is in very good vintage condition. Please check my other listings of David Marshall items.
