Superb and rare Topoké (Topoke) prestige sword-money, called a Liganda (or Likanda/Ikanda), from the Upper Zaire region of the Democratic Republic of Congo. This piece is spectacular due to its monumental size (approx. 160 cm), its sword shape with a broad, lozenge-shaped point, and its ancient brown-black patina, characteristic of traditional African wrought iron. Large Liganda were prestige coins used: as a bride price, in alliances between families, as a symbol of wealth and power, and sometimes displayed in front of the house as a mark of social status. This sword-money features a thick central rib, decorative striations, and the lower widening typical of Topoké production. It is mounted on a turned wooden base (a modern addition) allowing for vertical display.
