A monumental ceramic vase from West Germany, representing the Fat Lava aesthetic at its most expressive. Created during the 1970s, when West German pottery manufacturers were producing vessels with unique, dramatic textures. The combination of deep black with intense red gives this piece a striking character, emphasized by its impressive height of nearly fifty centimeters. The form merges a classical amphora silhouette with surface brutalism. A slender body widens upward, transitioning into a broad, open bowl. The glaze creates the characteristic Fat Lava contrast — smooth, glossy red sections neighbour rough, almost solidified lava-like black areas. The narrow opening at the neck base expands into a generous mouth, lending the piece dynamic proportions. The base bears the signature W.GERMANY 428-48, confirming its origin from the peak era of West German art pottery. The Fat Lava movement emerged in West Germany after World War II as a response to demand for affordable yet visually striking decorative ceramics. Dozens of factories in the Westerwald and Rhineland regions produced vases with varied glazes, experimenting with textures resembling solidified volcanic lava. The 1970s marked the height of this style's popularity — vessels grew larger and more dramatic, with increasingly bold colour contrasts. These pieces found their way into homes across Europe and America, becoming icons of the era's decorative sensibility. A vase of this scale works beautifully as a standalone sculptural element or as a container for dried arrangements and tall grasses. The wide opening accommodates generous plant compositions, while the stable base ensures security despite the considerable height. Good condition. The ceramic shows no significant flaws; it has retained its structural integrity and the full depth of its original glazing.
