Antique Chippendale Wall Mirror in Gilded Wood with Phoenix, 1760s
A superb antique wall mirror in Chippendale style dating from the 1760s, of great decorative beauty and imbued with Georgian character. This mirror is distinguished by a mahogany frame with richly carved shapes, featuring elegant scroll edges, sculpted details, and a magnificent architectural silhouette typical of mid-18th century English design. The frame is centred by a bevelled mirror, bordered by a decorative inner moulding in gilded wood adorned with carved floral motifs. The gilded finish adds warmth and contrast to the polished dark wood, giving the mirror a refined presence, typical of country houses. At the top is a magnificent sculpted and gilded phoenix, housed in an openwork circular frame, which imparts a highly decorative and symbolic quality to the piece. The phoenix, traditionally associated with renewal and rebirth, provides a spectacular focal point for the mirror. A sculpted and gilded shell motif at the bottom further enhances the Georgian decorative style. The mirror exhibits a beautiful aged patina, with visible signs of age and use throughout the piece, including wear to the gilding, surface marks, small cracks, rubbing traces, and an antique character of the frame. The reverse also shows signs of age, manufacturing details, and wear characteristic of a period piece. This is a characterful Chippendale-style wall mirror, ideal for a hallway, living room, bedroom, office, country house interior, or above a console or fireplace. It possesses that theatrical Georgian charm: elegant, ornamental, and slightly mythical with its crest depicting a gilded phoenix. A rare and decorative antique wall mirror, adorned with gilded wood details and a crest representing a phoenix, imbued with 18th-century style, great presence, and historical charm.
