Antique Swiss wardrobe hand-painted – Alpine folk art – dated 1781

Beautiful and authentic antique painted wooden wardrobe, likely dating from the late 18th century and bearing the date 1781 on its façade. This large two-door wardrobe features a lovely traditional Alpine folk art decoration, hand-painted. Each door is adorned with decorative panels depicting stylised bouquets of flowers in vases as well as flowering branches, in shades of red, ochre, green, and black. The red and black frames contrast harmoniously with the natural and warm tone of the wood. The lower part of the façade bears several painted initials as well as the date 1781, probably referring to the original owners or a marriage. This type of furniture was often made as a marriage wardrobe (Hochzeitsschrank or Bauernschrank) in Alpine regions. The interior, made of natural wood, is fitted with several shelves and also retains a small set of interior drawers. The doors are mounted on old fittings, and one retains its decorative lock entry. The wardrobe exhibits a lovely old patina, along with marks, minor wear, and irregularities typical for a piece of furniture nearly 250 years old. Its floral decoration remains particularly prominent and decorative. Period: late 18th century. Date inscribed: 1781. Probable origin: Switzerland / Alpine region, possibly Eastern Switzerland.
