Tandem Sling bench by Charles & Ray Eames, 1962

Early production three-seat Tandem Sling bench, designed by Charles and Ray Eames in 1962. Originally developed as a modular seating system for airports and other public spaces, the Tandem Sling combines an exceptionally light visual appearance with a robust and highly engineered construction. This early example retains its original black vinyl upholstery, with the characteristic geometric pattern formed across the individual seat and back panels. The three seats are suspended within sculpted polished cast-aluminium frames and mounted on a central steel beam. Padded black armrests complete the design. The sweeping aluminium profiles, reclined backs and projecting seat frames give the bench a distinctly architectural and almost aerodynamic appearance. Particularly attractive from the side, the construction clearly reveals the technical character that runs throughout the Eameses’ work. Good original vintage condition with authentic signs of age and use. The original upholstery is well preserved, with some local wear. The polished aluminium shows scratches, oxidation, surface wear and patina consistent with age. Please refer to the detailed photographs.
