French provincial oak chair, Lorraine – late 17th/early 18th c. (no. 1)
This characterful French provincial chair in solid oak probably comes from the Lorraine region and dates from the late 17th to early 18th century. The tall open back, gently scalloped rails, solid plank seat, and turned front legs give the chair an almost architectural, graphic presence. The oak has taken on a soft, warm tone with visible grain, old repairs, and small irregularities – traces of centuries of use. Centuries-old patina and honest craftsmanship: a chair that is as strong as a sculpture as it is as a seat. Three related chairs from the same collection are also available – together they form a coherent but not uniform set. A beautiful decorative object: in a hallway, beside the bed, in a dressing room or as a sculptural accent in a French, Belgian or wabi-sabi interior. Good for its age, with old repairs, woodworm holes and signs of use that enhance its authentic character.
