This rare and extravagant cocoon pendant from the 1960s is in excellent condition! With a diameter of approximately 53 cm and a height of about 40 cm, it is a striking centrepiece. The cocoon emits a warm, diffused light. The beautiful pearl/silk patina strongly indicates that this light fixture comes from a NON-SMOKING environment. Note: there are no tears or holes. There is a small barely visible red stain on the top of the lampshade (see photos). Currently wired for a bulb and European voltage, it can be easily re-wired. HISTORY: Often attributed to and very close to the creations of Achille & Pier Giacomo Castiglioni, this cocoon was actually manufactured in Germany by Goldkant Leuchten between the 1950s and 60s. Designer Fritz Wauer is credited by FLOS for developing the technology for spraying self-enveloping foam onto metal frames. After this innovation, it was adopted by Italian designers at FLOS. These Goldkant models are therefore the original precursors of later cocoon lamps. Ideal for a Mid-Century Modern, modernist, or minimalist interior. Carefully packaged for secure shipping.
