Antique compote dish Villeroy & Boch Mettlach Floralia 1577 – Saar Basin

An elegant antique compote on a pedestal signed Villeroy & Boch Mettlach, adorned with the polychrome Floralia decoration no. 1577. Its wide scalloped basin holds a generous bouquet of flowers arranged in a blue bowl, accompanied by small scattered flowers and highlighted with a fine burgundy line. The decoration extends onto the pedestal with a few delicately placed flowers on the foot: a lovely detail that adds a lot of charm to the whole piece. The item shows a beautiful patina of time, with some areas of discolouration and slight crazing of the glaze, particularly visible on the foot. No cracks or chips noted: the piece remains in very good condition considering its age. Under the bowl, the mark "V&B.M. – FLORALIA – Made in Saar Basin – 1577" allows this piece to be linked to the production of Villeroy & Boch Mettlach during the period of the Saar Basin Territory, between 1920 and 1935. A large compote that is as decorative as it is functional: filled with fruit at the centre of a table, repurposed as a decorative bowl, or simply left empty to enjoy its superb floral decoration.
