Frame size 36 X 43 cm. Roger Chapelain, known as Roger Chapelain-Midy, was born on 24 August 1904 in Paris and died in the same city on 30 March 1992. He was a French painter, lithographer, illustrator, and theatre decorator. Passionate about the Renaissance, the painting of Poussin, and that of the 17th century, Roger Chapelain-Midy defended a classical tradition throughout his career. A theatre decorator and costume designer since 1942, he notably worked on Les Indes galantes by Rameau in 1952, and on The Magic Flute by Mozart at the Paris Opera in 1954. The success of his work allowed him to work at the Cologne Opera. He received the grand prize for theatre at the international biennale in São Paulo in 1962 for this. He is also credited with illustrations for texts by Jean Giraudoux, André Gide, and Charles Baudelaire.
