West German Fat Lava ceramic vase, glazed relief surface, 1970s

A ceramic vase from West Germany representing the most distinctive aesthetic of the 1970s – bold, sculptural, built on contrasts of texture and form. This impressive piece, standing fifty centimetres tall, belongs to the Fat Lava ceramic movement that made West German potteries recognizable worldwide. The vase combines a classic bottle-shaped silhouette with relief decoration covering its surface. The glazed ceramic creates an interplay between smooth areas and raised relief elements, lending the piece a sculptural quality. The proportions – a slender body crowned with a narrower neck at twenty centimetres in diameter – maintain balance between monumentality and elegance. The signature W. GERMANY 288-51 identifies the manufacturer and mould number, following the catalogue system used by West German potteries. The 1970s marked the peak of West German decorative ceramics. Hundreds of manufacturers in the Rhineland region, from small family workshops to large industrial plants, produced vases and decorative vessels that found their way into homes across Europe and America. The Fat Lava style – named by collectors after the characteristic bubbling glaze resembling solidified lava – became synonymous with the bold design of that decade. Each pottery developed its own decorative techniques, experimenting with glaze thickness and texture. A vase of this scale serves as a standalone decorative statement, requiring no additional arrangement. It suits interiors that appreciate expressive forms – both mid-century modern contexts and contemporary spaces seeking contrast with minimalist surroundings. Condition is good. No significant flaws.
