Magnificent ancient Japanese textile made of painted velvet (Yūzen Birodo), a very refined traditional technique used at the end of the Meiji period. The scene depicts two bijin (elegant women) sheltered under a large Japanese parasol (wagasa), in a wooded setting, with their feet in the water. A soft, poetic composition, very representative of Japanese aesthetics at the end of the 19th century. The piece is signed with a seal in the lower left corner, a rare detail in these textiles. The original colours have aged over time, giving it an authentic charm and a very decorative atmosphere. Details: - Technique: Painted corduroy (Yūzen Birodo) - Origin: Japan, Meiji/Taishō period (circa 1890–1920) - Dimensions: 135 × 87 cm. - Signature: Visible artist's seal. - Subject: Bijin under parasol, landscape. - Mounting: More recent textile border (black) Condition: Antique piece over 100 years old showing signs of use: Discolourations, wear to the velvet, faded areas, some losses — but overall a very beautiful presence. The aged appearance gives it a true poetry and authenticity appreciated by collectors.
