Black leather Marlo bed, Afra & Tobia Scarpa, for Molteni, Italy, 1982. This rare "Marlo" bed was designed in 1982 as an improved version of the 1970s "Morna" bed. It is made of wood, black leather, and black lacquered metal. The headboard features a mechanism that allows for height and angle adjustment of the cushion in three positions and is covered with beautiful black leather cushions. The front of the bed rests on two black wooden legs, while the back is mounted on black wooden wheels. Dimensions: 180 x 210 cm, mattress height: 28 cm, maximum headboard height: 85 cm. This bed is designed for a standard mattress of 180 x 200 cm. It is in very good vintage condition. It shows some minor signs of wear, mainly on the wheels. The leather is impeccable, without defects or damage, with only a few barely visible areas of wear. The metal structure is in excellent condition and the bed is flawless. Afra (1937-2011) and Tobia (1935-) Scarpa both studied at the Venice Institute of Architecture. Tobia initially worked for the Italian glassmaker Venini. From 1960, the couple opened their own design studio. Their work encompasses architecture and everyday objects such as furniture and clothing. Tobia & Afra created designs for many major Italian and international companies, such as Flos, Gavina, B&B Italia, Cassina, Knoll International, and completed numerous interior design projects for companies worldwide. Molteni is an Italian high-end furniture company founded in the 1930s. It has a long and rich history in the production of high-end furniture, designed by many renowned Italian and European designers.
