Antique wicker basket bag, wood and leather, 19th century

An old wicker basket dating from the 19th century. It is made of finely woven wicker and features a wooden lid, a sturdy leather handle, as well as an original lock and metal fittings. The whole item reflects particularly careful craftsmanship, combining wicker, wood, leather, and metal. By its shape and design, it suggests a basket intended for travel or gathering. A very similar example is presented by a Japanese antique dealer as a basket used by a Christian mendicant order in the early 19th century. This attribution is based on comparison and cannot be certified for this particular piece. A rare and unique object, it will fit well in both a collection of antique wickerwork and in a characterful interior. Overall good condition. The wicker is fine and well-preserved.
