Superb Napoleon III table. Marquetry top and gilded bronzes.

Superb large table from the Napoleon III period, very richly inlaid in precious wood, enhanced with gilded bronzes. The fretted (i.e., animated) top is typical of these sumptuous creations of the 19th century, with their rounded edges with right-angled recesses. It offers high-quality marquetry in many wood species which, while remaining in the same range of tones, gives depth to the central vase and its floral decorations scattered all around. The motifs seem to drown in the wood as they are so tastefully interwoven. There are some missing pieces of wood, but few and not bothersome. Otherwise, the top is very flat, and set with a beautiful gilded bronze garland. In front are two deep drawers with magnificently inlaid fronts, again set in bronze of course, and opening with their original key and lock. The interior is a small jewel of West Indian mahogany. A marvel. All surfaces are occupied either by marquetry or bronze (those on the sides are very successful). The legs are fluted and connected to each other by a beautiful curved spacer. Each leg again offers a quantity of gilded bronze, square or going around the foot. In short, excellence down to the smallest square centimeter. We note a very small usual play in the stability (not very bothersome), some tiny losses to the top but the general condition of this imperial beauty is excellent. L: 151 cm. D: 76 cm. H: 75 cm.
