Original painting representing the portrait of a gentleman holding a book in his left hand, probably to indicate that he was someone erudite or learned, and wearing a gold earring on his left. Apart from sailors and buccaneers, the Compagnons du Devoir also wore earrings at that time. Painting signed lower left but not very legible.
