French work, c.1970. Bowl D 25 X H 24 cm; goblets D 9.5 X H 12 cm. Bubbled glass. Good condition, a chip on the ladle. A cylindrical bowl with flared lip, eight short-stemmed goblets, and a matching ladle, all in the same smoked glass where the bubbles are held in regular suspension. The Verrerie de Biot was founded in 1956 by Éloï Monod, a ceramic engineer. The bubble trapped in the mass initially appeared as a manufacturing defect: Monod chose to keep it and then made it the signature of the workshop. Bubbled glass has since become one of the few identifiable French post-war productions based solely on their material. Complete and homogeneous set — bowl, ladle, and eight goblets come from the same production.
