Armoire from Île-de-France in carved walnut, with wrought iron fittings, stamped I. Martiny (unlisted cabinetmaker). Early 18th century. Provenance: manor in Morbihan, classified as a historical monument. This walnut armoire, of great elegance, illustrates the refinement of early 18th-century Francilian cabinetmaking. The façade, with two moulded and arched doors, features a play of relief panels whose curved shapes rhythmically harmonise the surface. The sides, with recessed moulded rails and panels, reflect the care taken in the overall structure. The cornice, in a gendarme hat style, with a curved and moulded profile, crowns the composition with noble grandeur. The interior, divided into four shelves and a wardrobe (later addition in oak), demonstrates functional use and a gradual adaptation to domestic needs. The piece bears two stamps "I. Martiny", affixed to the upper and lower rails of the façade. This craftsman, unlisted in known registers of 18th-century cabinetmakers and carpenters, may belong to a local workshop in Île-de-France, active in the first half of the century. Attribution and hypothesis on the cabinetmaker The stamp "I. Martiny", although undocumented, invites reflection on the regional production of the time. Several hypotheses can be considered: - An independent Francilian cabinetmaker, not formally recognised as a master but working for an approved workshop; - A rural furniture carpenter who adopted the use of the stamp after 1743 (regulation of the carpenters-cabinetmakers' guild), a rare but attested practice in some provincial workshops; - Or a craftsman from a court or noble house, whose signature served as a guarantee of quality without belonging to the Parisian guild. Regardless of its origin, the quality of execution, precision of joints, balance of proportions, and regularity of mouldings testify to a mastered know-how and a production intended for a high-ranking residence. The original fittings, including the cremones, lock, key, and turned hinges, are made of finely cut and hammered wrought iron. Their quality and ancient patina confirm the authenticity of the piece. The assembly using screws, known as the Versailles system, allows for easy disassembly, a practice used at the time for transport in homes with narrow staircases, particularly in seigneurial residences. The whole, with a beautiful blonde patina, shows signs of old restorations and is distinguished by excellent conservation. The work is linked to the tradition of large regional workshops influenced by the court of Versailles, combining balance of volumes, quality of mouldings, and mastery of a sober yet expressive decor.
