Frans Defour ‘Modena’ Oak Highboard, Belgian Brutalist Design, 1970s
A fine example of Belgian design from the 1970s, the Modena highboard, designed by Frans Defour for Defour. Made in natural oak, the cabinet has a strong architectural character. The geometric pattern on the doors gives it a lovely Brutalist appearance, yet the warm wood and balanced proportions keeps the overall design refined. A particularly nice detail is the original leather pulls. Simple and understated, they add a softer touch to the solid oak construction. The upper section opens into a practical bar compartment with shelves and bottle storage. Below, two doors provide additional storage space. The highboard is in very good condition, with only little minor wear consistent with age and use. A characterful piece of Belgian furniture, combining the boldness of Brutalist design with a subtle and elegant approach.
