His first known works date back to the early 1920s. Fontayne expressed an early taste for purity, which is manifested especially in his still lifes composed in a very sober way. The same economy of means is found in its first landscapes, which are part of a figurative cubism. In the 1940s, rené fontayne, somewhat abandoning the other parisian salons, ensured his regular presence as that of the independents. True to his old houses of the périgord and the aveyron, the painter still presents languedoc landscapes and paintings of flowers, until 1950. 1942, the first edition of the independent national fair, a dissenting exhibition of official fairs.
