Charming little antique painting depicting a woodland landscape bathed in soft twilight light at the edge of the forest. This delicate work is an oil on wood panel, a technique typical of plein air studies from the French School of the late 19th century (in the spirit of the Barbizon School), framed in a gilded wooden frame with gold leaf. The painting possesses a beautiful atmospheric depth and benefits from a superb chiaroscuro treatment of the vegetation. It is enhanced by its wide original gilded wooden frame with generous mouldings. There are some chips in the moulding (see photos). A signature is subtly visible in dark paint in the lower corner, partially faded by time. The reverse shows a completely period mounting with its small artisanal framing nails and old pencil annotations. Condition: Generally good condition. It has a beautiful period patina, fine natural horizontal cracks testifying to its authenticity, and slight signs of wear on the gilding of the frame. • Overall dimensions (with frame): Height 20.5 cm × Width 27.5 cm. • Dimensions of the work alone (panel): Height 10 cm × Width 17.5 cm. Very careful and secure shipping.
