A splendid antique nineteenth-century Regency period Portoro marble fireplace surround, the frieze, corner-blocks and jambs carved with raised and fielded panels. English c.1830. A smart and assured design which celebrates the elegantly figured and opulent Italian marble from Liguria. Quarrying of Portoro marble began in the late sixteenth century and has continued since, a small amount still being extracted today. The Italians forwent its use on grounds of its high price and difficulty to work with, the majority of the material being exported to England and France for decorative use such as this fireplace surround. At Arlington Works all our fireplaces are prepared and restored in our workshops in London to the very best standards and are ready for installation and use. We are also able to offer a full supply and fit service for our fireplaces within Great Britain and are happy to discuss options for hearths and interior firebox finishes.
