An early-to-mid nineteenth century Regency period fireplace surround in Statuary marble, the shelf with single reed above fielded panel frieze and jambs, the corner-blockings depicting bunched flowers, all raised on block feet. English, c.1820. After the intricacy of Neo-Classicism fell out of favour, a more simplified approach in the Grecian manner was taken to fireplaces. Significantly plainer surrounds were admired and white marble was considered the most appropriate material for such ‘Athenian’ designs. The carved blocks of this fireplace surround could be interpreted as a celebration of the coming of Spring, the flowers chosen being typical of the period; primrose, snowdrops and to the centre, tulips. At Arlington Works all our fireplaces are prepared and restored in our workshops in London to the very best standards and are ready for installation and use. We are also able to offer a full supply and fit service for our fireplaces within Great Britain and are happy to discuss options for hearths and interior firebox finishes.
