Wassily chair by Marcel Breuer for Gavina. This iconic model was created by Marcel Breuer in 1925 during the time he was the director of the carpentry workshop at the Bauhaus in Dessau, Germany. For its creation, he was inspired by his Adler bicycle, fascinated by its design and the lightness of the tubular steel frame. Fortunately, he was able to take advantage of the new technique developed by the Mannesmann company, which allowed for the production of seamless steel tubes. Innovative in its materials and technique, this design has endured over time thanks to a succession of publishers, starting with the famous German-Austrian company Thonet, which handled its production until the beginning of the Second World War. During this period, it was not called Wassily but B3. It was only after the war, when the Italian company Gavina resumed production, that it was given this name in reference to the abstract painter Wassily Kandinsky, who attended the same school. After hearing all the praise from his colleague for his new creation, the designer decided to make a copy for his private quarters. In 1968, Knoll International acquired Gavina. The Wassily chair was thus integrated into the catalogue and is still produced to this day. The structure is made up of five round, bent, and chrome-plated steel tubes. It is assembled using a system of screws and held together by leather straps, creating a suspended effect. The base features four plastic pads to prevent friction with the floor. In very good condition, professionally cleaned and restored. The fabric is a grey-green colour and shows some signs of wear (see photo). The Knoll engraving is present on the base. I have the certificate of authenticity with the serial number.
