Former military service trunk

Large wooden box with metal handle used in the 60s by a young man for his military service. I do not know what it contained. On the trunk and inside are noted or engraved the names of the various localities where the soldier resided in garrison. The color (dark burgundy) is faithfully rendered in the photos. The box is in good condition but shows signs of time: the paint is worn and tarnished in places. The handle is partially rusted. The key is missing: the box closes but with a slight play (see photos) due to the metal plate.
