Antique bench table made of pine, traditional Chinese furniture from Shandong, dated around 1900. Originating from Shandong in eastern China, where local pine was crafted using mortise and tenon joinery without nails, featuring elongated tops and a carved frieze on the apron. In the rural homes and courtyards of Shandong, bench tables served as versatile surfaces: courtyard table, communal bench during meals, preparation base, or work surface. Their length allowed for multiple people to gather, and their intermediate height placed them between a table and a bench. Constructed from solid pine using traditional mortise and tenon joinery, without nails. The top, made of joined longitudinal boards, rests on four square-section legs. The front apron and side aprons feature a carved relief frieze of stylised plant motifs running the entire length. The carpentry preserves the simplicity of rural furniture from the east. Details.
