The P415 pendant lamp, designed by Danish designer Bent Karlby for Lyfa, is a distinctive example of Danish lighting design from the early 1960s. The P415 model was featured in Lyfa’s 1962 advertising materials. The shade takes the form of a wide, flat disc with a gently convex profile, made of thin metal. Its dark, graphite surface contrasts with the light, opal glass element positioned centrally. A particularly distinctive detail is the openwork, regularly perforated rim of the shade, whose rhythmic arrangement of slits lends the simple form a distinct graphic quality. The central part of the fixture is made of white, opaque glass, which softens the directness of the light source and introduces a contrast into the composition between the matte metal shade and the soft, milky surface of the glass. This design clearly illustrates Karlby’s formal language, based on minimalist forms, clear geometry, and the subordination of the structure to the lighting function. The openwork edge is not merely a decorative detail—it is a key visual element of the lamp, lending it a sense of lightness and a precise rhythm. The P415 dates from the early period of Karlby’s collaboration with Lyfa and fits into the Scandinavian Modern / Danish Modern movement, which was characterized by the combination of industrial materials with high-end design.
