Early edition First Chair, designed by Michele de Lucchi in 1983 for Memphis Milano. One of the most iconic and recognizable seating pieces of the postmodern Memphis Group Movement. It playfully challenges the strict, functionalist philosophy of modernism by treating furniture as a three-dimensional, emotional sculpture. De Lucchi’s choice of geometric shapes (disks, tubes, and spheres) mimics the structural abstract silhouette of a human sitter. The lightness, whimsical balance, and mobility of its parts are widely noted as a direct homage to the kinetic mobile art of Alexander Calder. It has a silver tubular metal frame, a round seat in black lacquered wood, a turquoise-blue round wooden backrest and two black lacquered solid wooden spheres that act as armrests. A true classic. The chair is in good original condition. Some light cracquele on the backrest, as visible in the photo. Furthermore very good.
